awareness taught in Kindergarten, and builds on those skills so that by the end of 1st grade,
students will:
• Decode and blend sounds to read and spell words with the 6 syllable types:
closed, open, r-controlled, vowel team, vowel-consonant-silent e, and final
stable syllable
• Identify word structure, such as: blends,
digraphs, combinations, diphthongs,
base words, prefixes, suffixes, compound words, and contractions
• Improve manuscript letter formation and handwriting using the D’Nealian style
• Read and spell 100 high frequency words
